When giant mushrooms plunge the Whispering Woods into cold shadow, Fea the Fox and Bennet the Mouse discover the Grand Autumn Banquet is in danger. They pry open a gap in the mushroom canopy, and a shaft of sunlight reaches a cornfield; the story explains how plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make their own food and release oxygen. After Bennet eats a cob but still feels weak, Fea tells him that oxygen is needed to break down food in cellular respiration.
